CyberPatriot is a national cybersecurity competition hosted by the Air Force Association. The CyberPatriot teams of Redding and Easton, CT are hosting Cyber101: seminars on the basics of cybersecurity. Ranging from devices to internet safety to and even more topics, spend a mere hour of your weekend learning how to protect yourself against those on the internet who wish to do you and your family harm.

We live in a world that is becoming more digital by the second, yet people are still in the dark ages when it comes to protecting their online selves. It is imperative that everyone obtains some degree of knowledge concerning cybersecurity, whether it's as simple as adequate password complexity or diving through the depths of Windows' Local Security Policy. You—we—won't survive otherwise.

I joined this team when I didn’t really know where to go. I wanted to build past that guy that just fixed your computer to be someone who actually did something. Throughout the years, I have learned a lot of the skills I would need to do that, in addition to introducing myself to other pursuits in computing, including molecular simulation, server enforcement, and to this day a love of 3D printing that keeps becoming more complex. In a world where data storage and processing increasingly is moving online, my whole team has seen that digital attacks on our person are becoming more common and are threatening much more than the family photo album. The only way to mitigate attacks is to have people who will develop secure software against threats and who are willing to teach others the basics of the attacks that they work to protect against. A world where only the devious know the complexities of computing is a world unsafe to the common person.

Our generation is one born into a world which is more digital than physical in regards to the nature of our own humanity. Curiosity, now seemingly infinitely expandable, as the tips of our fingers yield the capacity to access incomprehensible amounts of information; Connection, no longer subject to the confines of our own proximity to each other, as the world is now just that much smaller; Remembrance, fossilised as pixels on a pane of glass, as our own minds can only remember so much for us. And yet, despite the beauty of ourselves, one mustn't forget - evil finds great comfort in the shadows oft hidden from immediate view. As an increasingly younger audience accesses this constantly growing trove of treasures and treacheries for ever longer portions of their day to day lives, there exists only one certainty, amongst the unending currents of murky waters—such a world necessitates a novel force of regulation, security, and defence. Whether artificial or natural, our generation must proficiently undertake the responsibility which has been granted to us. With Herculean strength. No less than Atlas upholding the immensity of the heavens upon his back.
